Partners in Crime

I’ve got these two friends of mine, fellow hecklers, dear to my heart. One is the Rt. Rev. Dr. Josephus Ballou Gonzo, D. D. and the other one is William. They are bloggers now, and I just can’t wait until they get going. These people can get me laughing, and thinking, until I cry! Their blogs ae, respectively: Rev. Gonzo’s Universal Life Church and The Scroll.

Revised Stories

I have just revised my collection of short stories, which is one of the very oldest parts of this website. I began archiving my stories when I was fifteen years old. If it has been a while , you might like a fresh look at them. I have added some old favorites, and there are some more from the zine on the way.

lessons learned

A reading today with the Stone Soup Poets went off well. I was lucky enough to have been granted use of that podeum for a full 20 minutes as one of the featured acts. The other feature poet, whose name I am afraid has already escaped me, was older and considerably more experienced than I, but after the show hecongratulated me on a job well done. That meant a lot to me.

I had a bit of a crappy day. First of all, the coffeepot exploded AGAIN. This is actually a bit of a farce and was not, in and of itself, enough to ruin one’s day however I had allowed myself to get involved in a nasty little e-mail fight with my mom. It happens once in awhile. I guess things can’t always be sparkly freakin’ rosy all the time but itreally was a horse turd in the middle of my parade. Since arriving in Boston, I have been so incrediblycontent. I enjoy nearly every aspect of my life, which is such a very pleasant change from events of the recent past. (my friend chris keeps begging me to putpen to paper about some of my misadventured, but I am scared to) Anyway, it issuch a thrill to be doing things well for a change. That silly fight was anincredible contrast against it, and so in my mind I think I probably blew it out of porportion.

For the first time since arriving here, I felt alone. I knew I would feel better if Icould only vent, if only I had a knowing friend to confide in. I spun throughthe catalog in my mind for the right friend for the job… Luke perhaps… No… He might preach to me about the destruction of oppressive bonds and that would do prescious little to calm me down. Who knows what he would say? Kelley was somehelp, but that conversation was really short, and she doesn’t really know thewhole history. I get tired of having to explain to my friends of several yearsthat yes, I have two moms… one of them raised me and the other one gave birth to me… and then I have to describe all of that… I wish I still had my best friend around, Nik, but we lost him a few years ago. Quickly enough my imaginary catalog produced a well worn record: Ashley. As it turns out. I arrived in my apartment to a letter from her, all the way from Thailand, and covered in stickers. Ashley lovesbrightly colored stickers. She said to me, my mom must love me very muchbecause …she has bragged about you so much that the news of it has traveled allthe way to Thailand… Somehow, that was enough to puteverything into perspective, and my stupid quarrel with my mom just melted.

Later tonight I got an IM from my friend Diane in Atlanta, and she says a client of hers has read my novella, and absolutely loved it. He says he was thrilled that Diane knows me, the author.Someone loves what I wrote! Things aren’t so bad after all.

I learned a few important lessons today, like, check for broken springloadedcontraptions, whether social or mechanical, before employing hot water, andalso: don’t check your personal e-mail at work anymore! I guess the biggestpart of being an intern is learning how to accommodate your life to your work, and vice versa.

right wing hactivism

According to Michael Moore’s newest encyclical, there has been quite a scuffle over the release of his new film, “Fahrenheit 9/11″ and it goes beyond the disney thing. Theater owners have recieved death threats, or so they say… What’s this: TERRORISM in the name of anti-terrorism?! Michael Moore has been the victim of some terrrorism, er, freedom-fighting, himself.

“some very sophisticated individuals have been hacking into and shutting down our website. It is an hourly fight to keep it up. We are going to find out who is doing this and we are going to pursue a criminal prosecution. I’m preparing lots of cool stuff for the site so watch for new items on it next week. “

Personally, I have very mixed feelings about this kind of thing. On one hand, I’m a big fan of the french revolution, in principle and perhaps even in head-rolling action. What confuses me, on the ohter hand, is: what do I make of the headrolling when I don’t agree with the prnciples behind it?

“…she’s a flight risk.”

You’re not going to believe this, or maybe you are.

Today, mark came running down the stairs from his office with an interesting find. He said “check out what’s happening on
“…she’s a flight risk.” And what is happening? I’m not sure.
Mark says he commented to the author on her fiction, or what appears to be fiction, because, the reply was: “now there’s a metaphysical dilema” as if the narrator, the character, or the author is perhaps not fictional. After all, the truth is stranger than fiction, and these are the“memoirs of a post-adolescent, international fugitive…”

This is Where I Work

eastgate systemsThe building I work in is an older building, and it, or aprt of it, was probably a house once. This was not what I expected from an urban work environment. In fact it reminded me alittle bit of one of th eold newspaper offices back in Shepherdstown, but I like this building mor ethan some sterile, newer environment.

mark bernsteinThis is the man behind the curtain of the great wizard of Oz that is eastgate, and he is actually quite a lot of fun to talk to. He is a man very much apprised of everything in his field. It is nice to be, for once, out of the realm of students with questions, and into the realm of professionals with answers.me at my deskThis is me on my lunchbreak, workin’ hard, sportin’ a haircut and some new duds. I can’t stand to look at pictures of myself, in any attire, and I’m not sure what I think of the haircut yet, so this ends tody’s slideshow. would somebody get the lights?

Confessions of a Basement Cosmonaut.

Lately, my in-box has been backed up with letters from people wondering how I’m doing here in bean-town, but, more frequently, people seem puzzled. Just what is it that I do, anyway? I say, well, I work for a hypertext publisher, but for all the good that does by way of an explanation, I might as well have said that I am a basement cosmonaut. I thought I would take a minute to explain it all to everybody, because I think its exciting. You might at least find it interesting.

The company I work for is called Eastgate Systems . They are, like I said, a hypertext publisher. Well, you probably know what a publisher is, so I’ll start there. What is it that we publish? You guessed it, hypertext. What’s that? Excellent question, and it is one that I wrote to peruse with my undergraduate senior thesis. Would you like to read that thesis? It really is my best attempt to define what hypertext is, anyway. It’s written in all the kind of high-fallutin’ academic talk that you might expect from something called a “thesis,” and as such it might bore you to tears, but, if you’re curious, you can read my thesis.

In layman’s terms, hypertext is text, broadly construed, that is printed in a computer instead of on a page. Some people prefer the word “media” to the word “text,” whatever. Some other people prefer to say that “hypertext” and “multimedia” are the same thing, again, whatever. You get the idea.

What’s it like to READ a hypertext? Well, I’m glad you asked, because I wrote one. This was the other half of my thesis project. It is far from being the best hypertext ever written, and perhaps it isn’t the best text of any kind that I have ever written, but I put a lot of work into it and I am very proud of it nonetheless. Besides, I’ll never know if it is an enjoyable read or not unitl somebody reads the damn thing, so, this is me, begging you to read what I wrote. It’s called “To Win, Simply Play.” I consider it a draft.

I suppose it is because of my thesis that I have this strange new job in Boston, but this isn’t about my thesis, its about what I do now. Eastgate does a variety of things. Primarily, they publish things that people can read. I have read a few of the things that they publish, and I’ve had a lot of fun with them. The experience of reading them is something between playing a game and reading a novel. I can heartily recommend that you read one called “Afternoon” Afternoon is the story of a man who may or may not have the impression that his wife and child may or may not have been involved in a gruesome automobile accident. His life, and the things that happen to him, essentially everything about him, they’re all different depending on how you read the story. You always have the option to choose what comes next, based on what you find interesting.

Sometimes, I ahve trouble convincing the people I know to read, particularly novels, and certainly unconventional kinds of things, so, perhaps you want to read something short, something you don’t have to buy, and something instantly gratifying. The story I have in mind for you is one that brought back some fond memories of my time in Japan. I think you should read “Lasting Image.”

Eastgate doesn’t only publish this kind of fiction, and so that’s not all I do with them. They also publish non-fiction, mostly works of theory about the notion of hypertext. Their biggest project is a magazine, which is also published electronically, called TEKKA. TEKKA is great. You could describe it as a thinking person’s answer to the fluff and hype crap we get from things like WIRED magazine. I’ve already plunged into the deep end of this project, but that’s all I’ll say about that for now. You can read TEKKA, some of it, without a subscription, from their homepage.

The third thing that gets published by the hypertext publisher is software. I am as new to the software thing as most people are, so I’ll just give you the official spheil about the two piece of software that are published.

The first one is called Storyspace .
Storyspace is a hypertext writing environment that is especially well suited to large, complex, and challenging hypertexts. Storyspace focuses on the process of writing, making it easy and pleasant to link, revise, and reorganize.”

The second one is called, aptly, Tinderbox.
“It stores your notes, ideas, and plans. It can help you organize then in a variety of ways (many of them visual ways!) and to make sense of them. And Tinderbox helps you share ideas through Web journals and web logs.”

So what do I do? Well, I make the coffee. That’s not al I do, my other very auxiliary assignment is to act as a sounding board at meetings and stuff. I guess it helps to have a new perspective sometimes. Primarily, my task for the summer is to update the course compendium on eastgate.com. There are several purposes for such a compendium. The first intent is to improve hypertext scholarship. The field of hypertext theory is relatively new, and as such it is difficult for the left hand to know what the right hand is doing within the field. A compendium of resources will help with this. Such a compendium may also help foster the decision to teach hypertext reading and writing, by showing that the subject has already warranted study in a variety of different academic contexts. A compendium might also help create a forum for the sharing of ideas, and also help prevent the same ideas from hatching redundantly and in a vacuum. The sponsorship of such a compendium by Eastgate Systems is intended to help show that the Hypertexts published by Eastgate are, and have been, worthy of serious academic concern. The compendium might also help attract new readers to the hypertexts.

My work will not be limited to this project, though. I will also be on hand for technical assistance with things like fixing printers when they break, and maintaining the network. For this my experience with Maryville College?s Information Systems Services dept. will prove invaluable. This is a very small company, and everyone in it is quite busy with their work. I am needed to help make things run smoothly.

Some of my work will include the more conventional tasks to be expected in the publishing line off work, such as proofreading; considering, within a group, the manuscripts and articles submitted for publication; and the composition of promotional materials such as ad copy and book jackets.

Overall, I expect to be a flexible and eager asset to the work that is done at Eastgate.

I hope, at the end of this page and a half of rambling, that you have come away with a better understanding of what it is that I do. My hope is that my mail box will now begin to collect accounts of what other people are doing, because I am getting a little bit lonely here in this big city where I know no one. Perhaps you would like to come visit me and have a Boston Tea Party, or something. I am off, now, to reap the benefits of a five dollar all-you-can-eat Indian buffet.

Dollar-A-Pound at THE GARMENT DISTRICT

oh my god, it looks like a laundry truck exploded! this is more fun that stealing from the laundrymat. there are more options! There is a place, i have discovered, that is one block from my apartment that promises to sell clothing for ONE DOLLAR PER POUND. is it true? can it be? The place calls itself The Garment District

I am going to go and spend a little bit of my afternoon, and even less of my money on this place. At this rate. I can buy dorky T-shirts for everyone I know!

brainstorming and bargain-begging

i know, i know, i have been a bad bad blogger lately. I’ve been doing some behind-the-scenes stuff, helping a friend or two with their projects, and working on a new name. I have included my brainstorming below…

HERE’S THE DEAL:

i’ve seen it done elsewhere, and I am enabled to do it myself, so, if after reaqding my frustrated scrawl that attempts to arrive at a new name for my internet home, if you would like to help me, i can help you.

i’ll trade a free gmail account for a good name.

why would you want a gmail account? well, gmail kicks hotmail’s ass, and access is super exclusive right now so all the good names aren’t taken yet. well, “dylan@” was taken, but.. whatever. read all about it, and see for yourself.

notes:

goals:

a good name
an easy web address (dot-tk is free)
something unique enough to be searched for easily
something that isn’t unique enough to be forgotten easily
something that goes with the character of the thing and the character of the person.

brainstorming…

apothegm
omnibus
codex
broadside — i like this word, it means “an all out attack” it means “quick and direct verbal response” it means “a slapdash publication handed out in the street”
electric broadside (taken by a folk band called “broadside electric”
clockwork broadside

** I’ve jsut discovered that a search for “dylan broadside” reveales a certain album by bob dylan

slapdash, a word used above… i like it.

slapdash…

the word means: hasty, not strong, not planned, speedy, careless, rushed …

i’m not naming a punk rock band here… maybe the word is inappropriate.

slam-bang : with force and much noise, also something that happens quickly.

slapdash.tk is taken

Stone Soup Poets

Okay, I should back up a bit. This last week of my life has been a wild and crazy ride: the television appearance, the poetry slam, my balls-to-the-wall induction into a literary scene here in this city. I should say that none of it would have happened if it weren’t for my experience with the Stone Soup Poets They meet on Mondays, and I plan to attend again this week. I’m hooked.

The Stone Soup Poets meet at a place called Out of the Blue Gallery

The gallery website describes stone Soup this way:

An award winning 30-year venue led by beat poet/activist Jack Powers every Monday night from 8:00 on (Sign-up at 7:30 pm). A wide variety of poets/writers/performers of all ages and walks of life attend this reading. No night is ever the same and there are opportunities for writers to become featured performers.

I had no idea until I read this article, that the Stone Soup poets were as prestigious as they are. Check it out:

Stone Soup has become an initiation rite for many, like us, who cite it as where they gave their first or first important reading. Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gregory Corso, John Weiners, Leo Connellan and hundreds of others have not only passed through, but returned to read there again and again.

so this is just one more reason I’m excited as hell to be in Boston.

Hypertext: An Undergraduate Senior Thesis by Dylan Kinnett

It’s DONE! the largest piece of writing I ahve ever done is in the mail, on its way, it’s been turned in. The damn thing is 135 pages long! What is it, you ask? it’s two chapters of literary theory followed by a novella. You can read it here: Hypertext: An Undergraduate Senior Thesis by Dylan Kinnett

Zeal.com – Share your knowledge. Set the standard.

Years ago, I signed up for one of countless easily forgettible and highly redundant website profiles. You know how it goes, years go by, and you can’t even remember the name of the site anymore, but it still remembers you!

Zeal is just one of these sites… I get frustrated with its very picky style guide, but I come back to it when I can.

Zeal is a platform that allows people to share their favorite sites and improve search results for their fellow Internet users worldwide. Combining state-of-the-art tools, collaboration with a professional editorial team, and compelling community features, Zeal allows everyone to make a difference on the Web. Additions to Zeal reach Internet users worldwide through the LookSmart network of top portals, ISPs, and search services including Lycos, InfoSpace, RoadRunner, CNET, Inktomi, and LookSmart.com.

I have renewed my Zeal, as it were, and I await the day when my profile might earn me the “coveted” status as a Zealot.

SLAM!

after the television reading, i was invited to attend a poetry slam at a place called Cantab. The featured poet was a national champion, internationally published! I’d never been to an “official” poetry slam, but, i figured, “if its your first night, you have to fight,” and so I did. the next thing I know, teh elimination rrounds are nearly over and its me, head-to-head with one of the national finalists.

well, i got second place. i lost to a poem about kurt cobain, and also, i suspect, I suffered against the reputation of my opponent. It probably didn’t help either that I got nervous and dropped the fucking microphone! Overall, though, I had a blast!

i think poetry competition is oxymoronic and perhaps counterproductive, but, especially considering the caliber of the competition (a very good spirit), I’m proud to have taken second place on my first try!

Hey, I even made front page Slam News!
